Jonny and Melissa gave us complete control when creating the flowers for their wedding, and one of my favorite things to do is custom design unique bridal bouquets. I was so pleased with the way these bouquets worked with the beautiful A-Line dresses and the over-the-wrist style is something new for today's contemporary brides.

"The arch, minimalist designs by Moda Botanica, so cherished by showgoers during the past three years, left me a bit cold. I confess that I do not like minimalism or archness, so perhaps I should “recuse” myself from reviewing this year’s strange exhibit. I think I understood the erotic, lozenge-shaped glass “spectacles” as well as voyeurism suggested. It felt a little like I was looking at a “cage” of the sort they used in early 20th century Paris bordellos. (Brassaiphotographed them.) But why “gild the rose”, so to speak? White roses mainly. “I got it, I got it”, I said to myself. But its edginess was spooky and disconcerting like the last scenes of the astronaut in ‘2011 A Space Odyssey’—all white and sterile. Perhaps that was the point—to deconstruct beauty. It was very compelling, but incomplete and unresolved. The designers designed a design, so to speak. To their credit, this is an element of French philosophy and aesthetics. And this one was certainly ambitious. I can’t wait to see what Moda Botanica does to Hawaii, next year’s extremely challenging show theme."

When it comes to our Flower Show displays we always want to have people think differently about flowers and design. This year was no exception. "Thought provoking" is aways a bigger compliment to us than "pretty."

It has been a crazy month or so here at MODA - we have recovered from the intensity of The Flower Show, had a lot a of great consultations, worked with some lovely clients and finally getting back to blogging.

We are so excited to be hosting a party with one of our favorite event gals this week Gretchen McHale at MODA botanica. Not only is she the Director of Private Event Sales at World Cafe Live - but she is an artist who designs fabulous jewelry. Please join us this week on Thursday May 6th to celebrate the launch of her new website for Studio 320!

Gretchen has four overall collections: Hemingway (beachy, shells, seaglass); Tropic of Cancer (bold, colorful, luxe); Jewels (jewel tones and gemstones) and Earthly Pleasures (Earth tones, naturals stones). MODA will be designing four installation pieces that have been inspired by each collection. Chadds Ford Winery has donated the wine for the evening and Cuba Libre has graciously agreed to serve up the hors d'oeuvres! Please join us in celebrating local artists and great design!

PHS 2010 Preview Party Surprise!

As if our day could get any better after winning "Best in Show" - we showed up at the Preview Party to find 3 more awards decorating our sign and one tucked in our Display for a total of FIVE Awards!!!

It has happened again! Armas texted me this year (in a déjà vu, montage sort of way... since I was again in my car on my way to another event again this year....) "REPEAT!" with this image attached:

To which I again replied (again) that I was "all teary"; and Armas said he "was still shaking"...as you can see from his shot of the trophy they had just handed him!

MODA sets up at PHS Flower Show 2010

MODA botanica kicked of the flower show at 9:50 a.m. on 2/19 when our first 30k lbs. of the display was delivered to the PACC. Jane pepper thought it was pretty exciting:

Bailey whipped up this hand-tied bouquet as hostess gift for a party he is going to this evening:

Which was when we heard..."It looks like something Aretha Franklin would wear on her head!" We could only be so lucky! But, I do think you can look forward to some very cool and creative hand tied bouquets for Valentine's Day. Order early for the best color selection!

Even though the weather is brutal, and we were digging ourselves out of snow over Christmas - Spring is in the air! The Spring/Summer 2010 Issue of Philadelphia Wedding is warming our hearts. MODA was up to the challenge of being assigned the "blue" bouquet. There are very few natural blue flowers, and we took it as an honor to be selected for this particular color palette.

Top of the Tower

Stacy & John tied the knot at the Top of the Tower in Philadelphia. These gorgeous shots were taken by their photographer Heather Fowler. She captured their fun personality and personal sense of style beautifully! Check out her blog for more awesome shots of this wedding (and if you have kids or super cute dogs for that matter check out her portraits too!)

The Bridesmaids all carried pocketbook style bouquets that included Paphiopedilum Orchids, Scabiosa Pods, Antheriums and Galax leaves to compliment their chocolate brown gowns. Stacy opted for this gorgeous modern bouquet with the same selection of flowers.

John works at the Kimmel Center, so they were able to get a few dramatic shots inside.

And the CAKE! You have heard about me and this confection from past postings so I will spare you my spiel...however... Charm City Cakes baked a tribute to John's dog Arnie, with a cake version - his Mom surprised him with it! His face was priceless. The Food Network came out to video tape it too, it should air in March!

PWP Project Launch at Washington Square

Well it is officially, OFFICIALLY underway - let the snapping of photos and flashing of bulbs begin! The PWP together with Philadelphia Magazine publicly announced the winners at a party hosted by Washington Square on Wednesday November 18th. All of the "Business Partners" of the project were invited to come share the big news with Caitlin and Rodney. The couple is one step closer to home, now stationed in Germany. So their family rallied and we got a change to mix and mingle with them at the party.

We were delighted to attend (who doesn't love a party?) and to be in such good company was fabulous. Nicole Brennan from Lovely Girls Events is their wedding planner, she and I had a chance to catch up. Nicole is located in Delaware and has known Caitlin since their High School days!

Speaking of lovely girls... Nicole and I had a lot in common and look forward to working together soon!

Did I mention mingling with great people? Caitlin and Rodney call each other "Waffle" so the signature drink was a "Waffletini" - no syrup, thankfully, just a funny name to a sweet tropical blue cocktail! Over such said adult beverage - Bailey and I ran into a few more lovely ladies. Like Beka Rendell from Innove Events (who had some super nice things to say about us on her blog recently, thanks Beka!) and Marnie Cullen (no relation to the New Moon Cullens!) from TableArt.

MODA botanica did the flowers for this party as well as donating a portion of our services, should the couple like to have them as floral decorators for the wedding itself. The couple has a "Seaside theme" that they will bring to Winterthur for the big day. So we took the opportunity to drive up to NYC and dig throught the market. Armas and I found this funky piece of drift wood that we thought would evoke a touch of their theme.

But the star of the arrangement is the Snow Queen Protea...so beautiful...so soft!

Catching up with Vanessa and Amanda from Two Paper Dolls was fun too - they have such great style. Bailey and I chatted it up with them. They do beautiful work. Talking about letterpress got me itching to do some more printmaking.

PWP Update!: Winners Announced!

It's here! They have announced the winners of the Philadelphia Wedding Project! Congratulations to Caitlin and Rodney! They have an extraordinary story to tell. Both in the Army, they first met in March 2006, having both recently arrived at their unit, the 9th Engineer Battalion.

This lucky couple will have their wedding photographed by the six talented photographers we love and admire: Pete Malone, Joy Moody, Jenn Childress, Geoff Horowitz, Ryan Estes and Sofia Negron.

MODA goes to Market

Getting up bright an early (like 5 a.m.) Team MODA headed down to Aalsmeer to meet up with our buyer Tony to check out the Dutch Auction. Armas took the city on again as the driver of our rental car, and we were off. The vast set up was a bit much to absorb - there is so much to take in! Check out the little slide show I put together on the right, its just a taste of what we saw. It was like Willie Wonka Factory of the floral industry. The amount of automation and synchronization is astounding. I am sure the boys will ad some comments soon!

We were in and out all before dawn, first we hit the auction, then traveled across the huge facility (in the car) back to where the packing happens at Tony's place. All of the products get sorted, packed/boxed and routed to the different buyers' locations by trolleys automatically via a bridge, gets packed, and is on our way to us! All before the sun was up!

Then we were off to Wateringen, Nederland to the appointment Moniek had set us up with, the mother ship was calling us home. Now, as many of you know, the Blue Magic Vanda has been MODA's signature flower way before we began showcasing it two years ago. Much like the Green Trick (which by using so much we brought such significant awareness to the local US market that importers were scrambling with the new demand) the Blue Vanda has been used in increasing numbers since we showcased hundreds of them last year at the Philadelphia International Flower Show (see slideshow to the right!)

...so back to our adventure. Armas zoomed across the European motorways and we arrive well before noon. The owner Steef was just as welcoming and as talented as Moniek. His passion for the Vanda rivaled Bailey's neck and neck. His commitment to perfection, attention to detail was inspiring and refreshing. Steef has found his passion, it was clear to see how he and Moniek have become friends. Below are a few pictures of our trip to the greenhouse, the place was huge, the colors so intense - there are more in the slide show to the right!

And these special babies are a few years off but you will delight in them as soon as we can get our hands on them. Still to be named, still to be tested...white Vandas!

Monday with MODA and Moniek

Bailey surprised Armas and I with a treat over the weekend, he said "We're off to see the Wizard!" Bailey had emailed Moniek Vanden Berghe, a Belgian designer whom we hold in high esteem explaining that MODA botanica was in town to check out Hortifair, and had inquired if it would be okay for us to check out her shop. She regretted to inform us that she no longer kept a shop (now a gallery) but would love to have us join her at a workshop she was teaching in Antwerp. Not only were we her personal invited guests, but she invited us to have lunch with her afterward!

We are generally not big fans of the dried, but this may have the tides turning. We made a few things as members of the class...

After soaking up her delightful teaching, techniques and tips we were off to lunch and to cruise the market. Where we found all the things we love, as well as all the things we can not have thanks to our big brother: USDA.

But the fun was not over there! She took us on an insiders tour to the design firm where she makes and designs custom containers, vases and floral incidentals. Heaven! We had such a great day. Moniek was an absolute delight, so warm and down to earth. She is an artist that truly loves what she does - an it radiates from her. Thank You Moniek! After spending the day together she made a few calls for us, arranged a private tour at the grower who produces our #1 flower: The VANDA.

We bid her 'tot ziens' by the little farm with chickens that Bailey could not resist.

"Niewe bloemen" from Hortifair!

It was surprising to the three of us that the most noteworthy flowers we saw at Hortifair were from rather common genera, that we usually ignore. We only occasionally use Roses, Carnations, Gerberas, and Alstroemaria, but some of the most exciting advancements in breeding have been in these areas. We do believe there are no bad flowers, only poor designs, but with these new items on the market, we might just change our tune on some otherwise "common" blooms.

Hortifair Last Call

There is a ton to see at Hortifair, so we swung by for a few demos and to see if we missed anything one more time.
There seemed to be two main sections: Horti Grow & Trade and Horti Tech. Grow & Trade is where we found most of the new and exciting floral varieties and products that we have mentioned in previous posts. Tucked away in the floral section was a demo area where designers were brought in to showcase their unique talents and to boast the superior quality of "Oasis" forms and products (the sponsor of the showcase arena.) Once they finish the arrangements, they are placed on display for everyone to check out up close - most were inspiring, some not so much.

Seeing the new varieties is breathtaking, especially when an everyday Alstroemeria or rose is 6'tall. Some areas were just from growers promoting their specialty items such as these roses (yes they are that tall) or the Gerbs Armas was checking out...The displays are just as great as the flowers. It was like a mini PHS Flower Show!

But that is just a small section of the show - there were rows and rows of heavy machinery & software to help manage the systems that were fascinating. In between they had the quality test areas where we saw some pretty cool favorites as well. The booths looked like this:

If Freesia always looked like Gardenias, I could really get behind it!

Hortifair Day One!

Here are a couple of pics of our first, oh so jet lagged, day at Hortifair. I'm really into some Anthurium leaves, and Judy is all about her flower-festooned walker!

There were some great demonstrations, and we found LOTS of great new books for the library that we just can't find at home. Come and check them out when we get home.

Do you know who does really does European floral design (besides us of course) is Europeans! It seems like everyone is throwing around the "E" word willy nilly these days. While even English Garden, with it's mounds of pretty, precious, peonies and posies, might technically fall under the umbrella of European, what we're talking about is the experimental, architectural, imaginative, cutting edge design few others are offering in the US.

Now, you'll never catch us ripping off designs out of a book or magazine, but we freely admit to gathering inspiration and techniques from our international counterparts. The highest concentration of these innovators happens to occur in Holland and Belgium, and many of them will happen to also be in Amsterdam this week as well for Hortifair.

I was just here in May for Queensday, and Armas and Judith have also experienced Amsterdam. We're excited to be taking our first overseas business trip together. What better city, and what a perfect time of year.

We will be exploring the newest Dutch flower varieties, visiting with other designers, and scouting out new products for use and sale in our Center City studio. Keep posted for reports all week.

But first, one more cup of canal-side coffee to help shake this jet lag!

We have just arrived in Amsterdam for a week of research, rest, and relaxation, and it turns out we're being talked about back home. Daily Candy has just put out their fall 2009 wedding guide featuring us and some other fabulous wedding purveyors. Check it out!

Where in the world?

Many of our clients are curious about the truly international web of growers, brokers, and wholesalers that we use to source our floral materials. It's commonplace around MODA to have the opportunity to introduce a client to a new flower that they didn't even know existed.

We will the opportunity to attend the Hortifair flower and trade show next week in Amsterdam. I have had the opportunity to visit Holland on many occasions to visit with growers and see the new floral trends, often while they're still in the field. Expect lots of posts and photos!

One of our most useful assets is the Flower Market in NYC. While we have great sources and importers that deliver right to our door on 13th St., there are a handful of premium blossoms and accessories that we can only find in New York. Products from Holland, Thailand, Costa Rica, Vietnam, Kenya, and Ecuador just to name a few come and go through the New York market. It's a fraction of what it used to be, but a vibrant section of 28th still traffics in some of the living treasures we love using.

Armas and I, along with the incomparable Jennifer Cohan of Savory PR were in NYC a couple of weeks ago for a studio photo shoot with a national wedding magazine (more on that later.) We took a spin around the market, and Jennifer made us pose for a few photos. Kids in a candy shop...

Progressive Cocktails!

We are excited to be collaborating with our friends over at bahdeebahdu and Milner + Carr Conservatio n on a Design Philadelphia event. Their All in Good Taste progressive cocktail party will offer a chance to see some of the exciting art, design and conservation work going on in our beloved Philadelphia. The fun starts at Milner + Carr at 6, on Thursday, October 8. And there will be cocktails... mmmm cocktails.

An artsy bouquet for our Live Arts girl

Robin had passed our studio on 13th Street everyday on her way to work at the Philadelphia Live Arts and Fringe Festival offices. So when her beau popped the question, she headed right to MODA! She was drawn to our art based designs and with a piece of sculpture for her bouquet she headed to the Art Alliance for her ceremony and reception.
Armas designed her bouquet after reviewing my notes from her consultation combined with the her inspirational swatches by adding his personal touch to create this one of a kind piece...professional pics to follow!

We love a road trip. Today we headed on a site visit to do some research for our upcoming flower show display. The details for which are still under wraps, but our travels lead us over hill and dale to one of our favorite farms.

Bailey was looking for some fall plants to replenish the planters he maintains for Pub and Kitchen. So Armas and I found some things to entertain ourselves in the mean time...

Here are some ornamental peppers you will see in Bailey's planters...

...and he was really excited to get some Asters.

Here's some things you have seen on many of our designs over the past few months, namely the Macy's Bouquet of the Day 2009, installations in MODA botanica and a few events in between - our friend Corylus avellana. Also known as Harry Lauder's Walking Stick or maybe contorted Filbert here it is with leaves. Mmmm...contorted...

And some things you will not see until the holidays, or at least until after Thanksgiving - Poinsettia!

And something you should probably not see:

This lady told me she already had enough garden art - she was looking for lawn art. She negotiated this piece de résistance to $150 delivered! That's right, this trio of seahorses found a home. I'm offering a reward if any of you actually see it in her yard!

NYC Gift Show via The Knot

MODA is always keeping an eye out for the latest and greatest, and while we don't usually showcase a lot of the ware one finds at the Gift Show we were in the neighborhood so we thought we would swing by...

...after we stopped The Knot studio! We were there to drop off some centerpieces for Episode 10 of The Knot Live! Meredith showcased us in the "Splurge vs. Save" section of the broadcast, which appears about half way through the video clip. Blue Vandas and Dahlias make the difference with the centerpieces - but they are both so gorgeous its hard to tell which one is the "save!" The Knot Live! episodes run Wednesdays at 12 p.m. ET, log on to catch the next episode of The Knot LIVE! We have been invited back so stay tuned!

Just in case you were wondering if we found anything at the Show, we did pick up a few ideas that we are keeping under wrap. Until then here are a few things we know you can't live with out:

Sandwich Smash 2009

MODA is partnering up as a Sponsor with Sandwich Smash 2009 on October 4th. So get your appetites ready! We met Jeff Vogel this week to see how we could get involved. He is organizing this event as well as being the co-founder of unbreaded.com. His blog was just named "Best Philly Food Blog" by Philadelphia Magazine in the August Issue - so you know the Sandwich Smash will be stacked!

Five of Philadelphia's top restaurant professionals will perform live chef demos of their signature sandwiches. Each chef will demonstrate to the audience how to make their signature sandwiches, representing French, Italian, Israeli and American cuisines. At the conclusion of each demo, the audience will get to eat the sandwiches, five in all!

This non-competitive showcase event will be hosted by Esquire Food Editor Ryan D’Agostino, who will interview the chefs while they cook and draw out the stories behind the food.

Sandwich Smash has partnered with Philabundance, the region's largest hunger relief agency, to organize a peanut butter and jelly drive to benefit people in need throughout the Delaware Valley. Proceeds from the event will go toward purchasing jars of peanut butter and jelly to help feed the hungry. Event attendees and individuals in the broader community are also encouraged to donate peanut butter and/or jelly to Philabundance.

Recently she called to book a consultation for a baby shower arrangement, we didn't realize it was HER'S! Soiree in the City: September 20, 2009

MODA botanica has paired up with our friends at Provence Catering to showcase their decadent delights among our stylish designs at the second annual Soiree in the City. The Showcase will be held at The Power Plant, located at 230 N. Second Street in Philadelphia. Stay tuned for the menu Chef Pamela will be presenting! (And if you have a few extra minutes check out her Guilty Peasures blog - you will be drooling!)

This September soiree was created as an alternative to the typical bridal show by a wonderful make-up artist Beke from Beke Beau and her friend photographer Laura Eaton. At this event you will see cutting-edge bridal fashions, beautiful custom jewelry and hand made accessories that have been featured in major fashion magazines.

Weekly Callas

We have a client who lives in our neighborhood who loves to send his girlfriend flowers, EVERY WEEK. She loves callas, EVERY WEEK. We love the challenge of making each experience with them unique EVERY WEEK! We have been working with this couple on a weekly bases for almost a year now. They really leave the design up to us, which we love. But the pressure is on! I am actually a little intimidated. Once both Armas & Bailey were out of town & it was my responsibility to make the arrangement. Seriously, I broke into a cold sweat. When designs are as cool as the one Armas made this week for them - you gotta perform!

I am not sure I did his design justice with my photo above, but check out how carefully he designed the piece so that the calla just hovers over the table surface. Beautiful!

Philadelphia Wedding Project

Sofia Negron is one if the snap happy artists who have put together an incredible opportunity where one lucky couple who is planning to wed in 2010 or early 2011 will be able to have six local photographers capture their big day on film! PHS International Flower Show 2010

It's official, MODA botanica has been invited back to be a major exhibitor at the 2010 Philadelphia International Flower Show! The "Exhibit Space Contract & Agreement" is signed, sealed & delivered! Save the date: February 27 - March 7, 2010!

We had our first meeting with the shows Director Sam Lemheney & Bob Felke, the shows Operation Coordinator today. They raised an eyebrow at our idea, which was quickly followed by big grins and they gave us the go-a-ahead to start designing. Stay tuned for more hints about our upcoming sophomore debut!

Laura Hoover is in the PR dept at PHS. She has been keeping a Flower Show Blog where she chats it up about our meeting & tried to get us to spill the beans about our design ideas for next year. She also sent out a press release about the upcoming 2010 Flower Show Theme, check it out!

PAWS Dinner with Style

The 5th Annual Chefs’ Dinner for PAWS (formerly Dinner with STYLE) was held on Monday, June 29th. It brought chefs and patrons together for an interactive evening of food, fun and fundraising. The Hyatt Regency Philadelphia at Penn’s Landing was the venue, and MODA teamed up with two of Philly's best chef's creating decor to highlight their cuisine.
This was a sold out event where local chef's were paired up with 12 guests per chef. We had the opportunity to design for both Cuba Libre and 1225 Raw Sushi & Sake Lounge. Once you check out these menus you'll be booking reservations.

We made a special trip to the New York flower market to select the perfect flowers for each restaurant that morning, and headed straight to the Hotel and designed them. Sofia Negron swung by to capture a few details for us, here are a few quick shots from her...stay tuned for more!
Cuba Libre
Cuba Libre's Chef Guillermo Pernot presented custom designed dishes that are not even available on the Cuba Libre Menu. He used the opportunity to showcase his creativity and play around with some different, less traditional dishes. The guests especially loved the hot & sour lobster soup – huge hit!

For this chef we designed the narrow tables to be tall bar height, dressed in this gorgeous red taffeta "Cirque" linen surrounded but tall Fruitwood Chivari Bar Stools. Rattan chargers greeted the guests with the menu and evening program.

The tables reached even higher with Red Monstera Leaves and Giant Sellom Philodendron Leaves creating a canopy over the guests. Gloriosa lilies and Diplocyclos (also know as the lollipop climber or marble vine) were details looped and trailing down the tall glass vases.

1225 Raw Sushi & Sake Lounge
Raw based their designs around a huge light up table that Chef Sam Yoon prepared and served from. You can get these treats from the restaurant, I recommend grabbing a table at the outside courtyard seating area and sipping a little Sake. The have over 50 different types of sakes - the biggest selection in the city, if not the east coast!

We built upon the lighted bar theme with red cocktail cubes on each corner that hosted our tall black vases. These were filled with fluffy Cotinus Coggygria (also known as 'Smoke Bush') with it's purple-pink plumes and purple leaves. Towering out of this were huge seven foot tall red Haliconias and black lacquered six foot bamboo. Their placement in front of the mirrored wall was stunning. Guests were seated at long tables draped in red with Crystal Chivari Chairs and Sake glasses - both traditional wood boxes and glass!

Carl & Nadia live down the block from MODA. They were one of the first neighbors we met when we moved in, we became fast friends. So, it was a pleasure to be a part of their big day this past Sunday. They had a quaint ceremony on Isminger Street after which the guests were whisked away in a fleet of cabs to Zahav for the reception.

Here is a sneak peak of the personals Armas created for them incorporating Olive leaves, Artichokes and Scabiosa pods. We are really excited to see their pictures!

Laura & Jeremy at the Independence Seaport Museum

Laura and Jeremy tied the knot at the Independence Seaport Museum this past weekend. This is another hidden venue that Philly has to offer. If you are looking for a contemporary indoor space (check out their great chairs too) with a large patio over looking the water - this place is worth a visit.

We were finished setting up and caught a sneak peak at the outdoor ceremony below when it started. I tried to get a little artsy here...

The background truly is beautiful especially when the weather was as nice as this one.

We mixed up some low and high arrangements incorporating the brides favorite color - purple. The photographers for the day were Carina and Amanda from Love Me Do Photography. They are totally spunky and I can't wait for the photos to be available on June 16th - I'm sure they captured the moment better than me!

The most fun you can have near Amsterdam at 5 am.

I figured it was about time that I post a couple of photos from my trip to Amsterdam a few weeks ago. During the 2009 Philadelphia Flower show, I had the opportunity to meet Tony Cummins from Tuning Floral Export based at the Aalsmeer flower auction in Holland. He kindly picked me up at 5 in the morning in Amsterdam, and drove me out to tour the auction first hand.

Aalsmeer is the largest flower auction in the world, and where we obtain almost all of our premium product. I had the opportunity to visit the Aalsmeer auction while still a student, but I have always wanted to get a behind the scenes tour. My wish came true!

I was right on the floor of the auction, nearly getting hit by the long trains of flowers. The photos don't begin to show the vast size of the auction, and my camera was in failing health, so the pictures aren't the best. You get the idea. The coolest part was seeing the exact flowers in Holland that we used for a wedding just a few days later. We took different planes, but both met up again in Philadelphia. If only I could justify hand picking all of our flowers in Holland!

Holland is the center of the cut flower world, and Amsterdam is by far my favorite city to visit.

It's always nice to combine business and pleasure. I try to visit at least twice a year to keep abreast of the latest European trends. Armas, Judith, and myself will be heading back in mid-October for the Hortifair, an international flower and trade show. Anybody want to come along?

AIGA Philly's Fellow Award Cocktail Party 2009

AIGA Philadelphia honored Laurie Churchman tonight with a Fellow Award Cocktail Party at the Art Alliance in Philadelphia. AIGA’s mission is to advance designing as a professional craft, strategic tool and vital cultural force - very MODA...

Not only do we like working in this particular space, but our graphic designer Anna Levin is a member. So when she gave us a call for some floral decor for the event we thought it would be a great way to mix it up with people who had great design aesthetic. (Stay tuned for the professional Pics!)

MANNA at MODA

MODA botanica partnered up with MANNA (Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance) and our friends at Pub and Kitchen on May 21st to kick off the summer.

There were lots of volunteers learning about MANNA's mission to prepare and deliver delicious, nourishing meals, along with counsel and hope, to people at acute nutritional risk from life-threatening illness, helping them improve their health and quality of life. If you are looking for a fun volunteer opportunity give Meg Rider at Manna a call!

Pub and Kitchen were generous with their tasty treats that over 50 guests enjoyed. They definately got people talking to each other & raving about their great food & exceptional staff. If you haven't checked them out yet - swing on by (they don't take reservations) 1946 Lombard!

Brides.com at F.U.E.L.

I got a call from Sofia Negron (of Sofia Negron Photography) last week that I needed to get out networking again. "There's lot's of great stuff out there and your missing it," she said. Plus, there is usually free food involved with networking - so I jumped at the chance to check out F.U.E.L. with a fresh eye. It had been awhile since I was at 249 Arch Street - like when it was the "Real World" house. It seemed like a great idea to sell the venue in original TV condition, but a wee bit skeevy too.

The location has been revamped and is a cool event space and has been repainted white for a clean fresh blank canvas to work from, beautiful chandeliers and an open floor plan. But what makes it even better for me is the great artwork on display. F.U.E.L. is an acronym: Fostering Undergraduate Exposure on Location, and as a Tyler School of Art Grad myself I could have used a space like this! They are committed to cutting-edge arts and culture - so I can't wait to have a MODA client book this space. We'd be a perfect combination.

Anyway, back to networking...Sofia and I had a great time:

This past weekend we spent some time with our friends at The Four Seasons. Caren Pocino gave us free reign as long as we incorporated yellow and hot pink. She also took the arrangements the extra mile and incorporated Pin-Spotting into her budget. These pictures are from my iPhone - but we will upload some professional ones soon so you can really see what a difference it makes! Clients spend so much time deciding on all the details, so highlight them! It really makes a difference!

Please Touch Museum Open House

If you haven't been to the newly refurbished Memorial Hall now that it is the Please Touch Museum - make a play date and get over there! They have been open for about a year now and both the museum and the building are incredible.

Max and Me are the in-house catering company for the museum and always have something deliciously fresh to showcase. They invited us to showcase some of our designs for their open house on May 13, 2009. It was a chance for them to reach out to new and prospective clients by showcasing Hamilton Hall set for an event. This was a great opportunity for MODA to display some of our designs too! What better combination than Babies Breath, mushrooms and carnivorous plants! The Total Table hooked us up with our linen "Creme Zebra" which rounded out the whole theme.

And who doesn't love baaabies...!

Urban Outfitters: Dinner Party

Seaside Wedding: Allison Rose

I met Allison when she used to work at a destination management company. She would order flowers for her corporate events from me. She was always so great to work with, always loved the flowers and would say "when I get married I am calling you to do my flowers! You always know what I want!" Well, she actually did call! We met with her and her coordinator last year and were so happy to work with her.

Allison got married down the shore at St. Augustine's and had her reception at The Flanders Hotel. She loves hydrangea and wanted some ocean touches - we worked in some coral colors and textures with painted Corylus, Coral Charm Peonies and various shades of blue Hydrangea.

Bailey had ordered all the flowers for the event. This one was pretty exciting since he was in Holland and touring the Dutch Auction on the day they were packing Allie's flowers!

Armas and I took a stroll down the boards while we were waiting for the ceremony to be over - we caught the wedding party getting some photos before hand. Phil Kramer was the photographer so the shots are sure to be beautiful - we will post a few once they are online!

The florists are fresh off their Best in Show win at the Flower Show, and the silvery air plants and exotic orchids from their winning design take on new life as organic accessories." Thanks!

Macy's Flower Show

A few months ago we were approached by Scott Byers, with Macy's Parade & Entertainment Group. He was looking to add some new designers to the invitation list for Macy's flower showcase called "The Bouquet of the Day." The Macy's Philadelphia Flower Show is held in the Grand Court at Macy's Center City, the site of Wanamaker's flower shows from the 1930s through the early 1970s. This year they are partnering with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society - and it is through these friends that we became acquainted. It seemed like a great opportunity - and it was! (Especially for Bailey - he looked to the the "happiest" in his head shot so he was the front man for this event for all the online bio stuff for Macy's.) Our arrangement is on display Sunday 4.5 through Tuesday 4.7.2009. If you can't make it to the store - check back for more pictures - Michael Persico will be swinging by to take some professional shots that we will post later!

The word "bouquet" is a bit misleading....the pedestal provided for us to design on is quite large and nestled within a large planter. So we designed an arrangement that would bring the focus up and fill the huge space.

Tall branches of Dutch Corylus wound their way up towards the ceiling scattered with Dutch & Thai Vandas. Black Birds of Paradise from Hawaii, Kangaroo Paw from California and Ti Leaves from Costa Rica grounded the arrangement at the base where viewers can take an intimate look at the unusual collections.

Sandwiched between white wire were layers of the Ti Leaves. Once we sewed up the edges with yarn it formed the giant ribbon that we wove around the whole piece for a twist of the unexpected.

Urban Out Mitzvah

This was a fun weekend for MODA in a diferent sort of way. We had two events but they were more for our own enrichment than service oriented, per say.

Saturday during the day we helped Urban Outfitters with a Bar Mitzvah they designed. They do not rent out their headquarters campus on a regular basis - but occasionally make an exception.
I didn't have my camera with me but their restaurant is like living in one of their stores. They have a definite aesthetic and we were happy to help make their vision come true - with a MODA twist of course! Luckily photographer Sarah Miller did have her camera on hand & sent us a few shots of the final pieces:

We hooked them up with flats of wheat grass, gorgeous parrot tulips and these super cool tulips Bailey found called "Leo." They are my new favorite tulip - the edges are more than ruffled they have deep dips in them, each one seems unique. Here is a similar picture I found on the web of them. Ours were really quite red.

Union Trust Steakhouse

Part of what we love about our location at 13th and Pine is being part of the community.
One of our customers came in one day and asked if we did restaurant work - we struck up a great conversation which lead to us doing the floral work for the Union Trust Steakhouse opening party earlier in February.

Bailey & Armas came up with some truly fabulous designs for the event, especially the registration area under the tent. They created this huge framework out of River Cane suspended from the ceiling and incorporated hanging Shekong Heliconia, James Storei Orchids, and Mozart Calla Lilies which set the tone for the whole evening.

Inside the newly renovated restaurant the colors, flowers and textures of the displays in the tent followed through with tall vases supported hand woven spheres intricately woven with heliconia and orchids on the bars downstairs:

The event was a great launch for the new venture and we were thrilled to be invited to be the florist designing their weekly arrangements and events. If you are looking for a new place to dine in the city, I highly recommend checking it out!

Flower Show Rehab 101

I readily admit that I have not posted since our Flower Show debut, because I am so in love with the pictures we posted...I just don't want them to get buried in the blog! This past week the photographer, Michael Persico, gave us a CD of all the images he shot so I am feeling better, I think I can let go. I will work on a slide show of them so stay tuned!

On the last day of the Show we had a little Award Ceremony of our own with the trophies:

Then we stayed after and took down the display. We had great helpers and it did not take too long. All of the now infamous water bottles were recycled, the compost-able materials were packed separately and taken to my mom's garden. All the rest was dismantled on Monday and is back in storage at our warehouse. I can't wait to think of new ways to use it!

...and we are honored to announce that MODA botanica's "MODO Moderno" has won "Best in Show: Display Garden - Floral" and "Best Achievement: Modern Floral Display."

I was on the way to an event set up when got text from Armas around 2PM directing me to check my email. I figured it was a client that we needed to follow up with or a proposal revision that the boys couldn't get to since they are working the show. I actually cried when I opened the email & read the details that had been hung from our display sign.

MODA botanica

This morning at 6:45 AM we turned on the lights and officially submitted "MODO Moderno" to the PHS Philadelphia Flower Show for competition.

Last year MODA botanica was formally introduced to Sam Lemheney, Pennsylvania Horticulture Society's Flower Show Design Director. He invited us to participate and we are honored to be the only "New Comer" to showcase as a major exhibitor.

The shows overall theme is "Bella Italia" so we decided to put a 21st Century twist on a classical Italian renaissance garden. Keeping with our own personal sense of style - we incorporated some of our favorite things (in mass of course) like Vanda Orchids, green Dogwood,Tillandsia, water tubes...and of course zip ties!

We got a lot of compliments in the beginning of set up which kept us motivated, but once we set out the 2200+ water bottles on top of the light boxes we knew we were on the right track. The PHS Flower Show blog details some of what the guests are saying, we seem to be on the right track.

We had had a ton of great ideas and design details - but they would not have been realized with out the help of our friends & volunteers. We started by pulling a few late hours at MODA botanica weaving and zip tying green Dogwood branches, wrapping water tubes in textured yarns.

And then moved to the show floor the next day, where we tortured our friends even more by asking them to manipulate the Dogwood into "Cypress trees."

And weaving yarn...

...and, well, SOMEBODY had to take all those caps of the water bottles!
